The installation of the smart meters in Plateau State by the Jos Electricity Distribution Company came with a lot of mixed feelings as residents of Jos have complained of the way the meter absorbs units at an astronomical rate that puts leaks in the pockets of costumers.
The Nigerian Electricity Management Service Agency has directed the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to suspend further deployment of smart meters.
According to D'yong Mangut an aide to Hon. Bulus Solomon Maren the Member representing Mangu/Bokkos in the House of Representatives, the action of the regulatory agency is as a result of the "The need for Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) to revert to the metering code of Nigeria" motion raised on the 24th of October, 2017 by Hon. Bulus Solomon Maren and which was adopted by the House of Representatives wherein the House mandated the Nigerian Electricity Management Service Agency to direct the Jos Electricity Company to adjust the operational voltage on their new smart meters from 144 volts to 264 volts as is obtainable in the metering code of Nigeria.
